Pawsox name Boles new manager

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

It didn't take the Pawtucket Red Sox long to turn the keys to the clubhouse over to someone who knows how to get there.

Kevin Boles, who managed the Red Sox Double A affiliate in Portland, ME each of the past three seasons, has been named the new skipper in Pawtucket, taking over for Gary DiSarcina.  DiSarcina left the club six weeks ago to take a major league coaching position with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Boles, 38, spent the first 10 years of his managerial career at either the Rookie or Single-A level with the Marlins, Royals, Twins, and Red Sox organizations, before spending the past three seasons at Double A Portland.  Overall in 13 years as a minor league manager, Boles has compiled a 797-786 career record.  He becomes the fifth PawSox manager in the last six years, following Ron Johnson (2005-09), Torey Lovullo (2010), Arnie Beyeler (2011-12), and DiSarcina (2013).

The previous four managers were all promoted to big league coaching gigs directly from the PawSox, as Johnson became Boston's 1B coach in 2010, Lovullo was Toronto's 1B coach in 2011 and then Boston's bench coach in 2013, Beyeler was Boston's 1B coach last season, and DiSarcina moved onto the Los Angeles Angels 3B coaching job this off-season.

There will be some familiarity for Boles at the Triple A level.  Besides managing three players last season who made an impact on the World Champion Boston Red Sox - Xander Bogaerts, LHP Drake Britton and RHP Brandon Workman (who all began the year in Portland) - other Sea Dogs who played for Boles include several of the Red Sox organization's top prospects...pitchers Matt Barnes, Henry Owens and Anthony Ranaudo; catcher Christian Vazquez; and infielders Garin Cecchini and Deven Marrero.

Under Boles, the 2013 Portland Sea Dogs finished 4th in the Eastern League's East Division at 68-73.  In addition to Boles' hiring, the Pawsox today announced that Bruce Crabbe has been added to the Pawtucket coaching staff.  Crabbe joins pitching coach Rich Sauveur, who will return for his seventh season with the PawSox, and hitting coach Dave Joppie, who will return for his second year.

The 2013 Pawsox won the International League North Division, and fell in the Governors' Cup championship series to Durham.  Pawtucket won the IL title in 2012.
